Resistance

News Politik

Anger erupts at Republican town halls

On Thursday night, two Republican members of Congress – Reps. Jason Chaffetz of Utah and Diane Black of Tennessee – were each confronted with impassioned constituents during simultaneous events. The shouted questions, emotional pleas and raucous protesters of the evening crystalized the GOP's tough political road ahead as it forges ahead with rolling back Obama's accomplishments, including the Affordable Care Act.

As The Senate Confirmed Sessions, Neighbors Listened To King's Letter Outside Mitch McConnell's House

Feb 9, 2017 11:45 am

As the Senate was voting nearly on party lines to confirm Jeff Sessions as the head of the Justice Department, about 100 people thronged around Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell's house around the corner.

„Listen to Coretta, say no to Sessions,“ they chanted. „Be like Liz. Resist! Persist!“

The crowd, largely made up of Capitol Hill residents, came out on a few hours notice to hear women read the letter that Coretta Scott King sent in 1986 to oppose Sessions' nomination for a federal judgeship. McConnell invoked a rarely used rule to silence Senator Elizabeth Warren as she read it aloud the evening before.

An unprecedented number of women plan to run for office

[O]ne of the clearest results of the [Women's] march — and of the election as a whole — is the wave of political participation among women at local, state, and national levels that’s emerging in its wake.

[..] Emily’s List president Stephanie Schriock said the organization holds [..] trainings often, but the “incredible energy” around this one is unique. “We spend a lot of time recruiting,” she said. “[Now] we’re seeing women calling us.”

Like-minded organizations have reported similar spikes in interest. VoteRunLead reported that in the past two months, more than 2,300 women have signed up to take its online course, and the organization’s January 7 seminar registered 1,200 women in less than 48 hours. Since Election Day, Emily’s List has had more than 4,000 people reach out to say they’re interested in running — 1,660 since Inauguration Day. And according to a She Should Run spokesperson, in a normal month the organization sees “at best, and with significant effort, anywhere between a few dozen to a few hundred women” sign up. But in the three months since the election, co-founder and CEO Erin Loos Cutraro said 8,100 women have indicated their interest in running for office [..].

[A] common thread among the women there for the candidate training: Every single one wanted to change something concrete. According to Cutraro, this is a common characteristic of women who seek office — running to get something specific done, versus simply to gain power.

UTA Cancels Oscar Party to Protest Donald Trump’s Travel Ban

A top Putin critic on how to oppose Trump: “making him look like a loser is crucial”

A conversation with chess champion Garry Kasparov

Trump will continue to push the limits, to find the cracks in the system that constrains him. America is finding out the hard way that much of its government is based on tradition and the honor system, and not explicit laws. [..]

GOP politicians are putting party over principles by supporting Trump so loyally, and by so doing, they reveal they don’t actually have any principles at all.

MoMA has swapped out Picasso and Matisse paintings for works by artists from Muslim-majority countries

The New York Times reports that on the evening of Feb. 2, seven works by Iranian- and Sudanese-born artists, including a painting by the late architect Zaha Hadid, were installed on the fifth floor. A towering steel and aluminum sculpture by Iranian artist Siah Armajani was placed in the lobby. The wall text next to each work makes explicit the 87-year old institution’s position:

This work is by an artist from a nation whose citizens are being denied entry into the United States, according to a presidential executive order issued on Jan. 27, 2017. This is one of several such artworks from the Museum’s collection installed throughout the fifth-floor galleries to affirm the ideals of welcome and freedom as vital to this Museum as they are to the United States.

These are the latest retailers to dump Trump-branded goods

Add Sears Holdings (SHLD) and Sears-owned Kmart to the list of companies that are shying away from the Trump family brands. [..]

Fashion news site Racked.com has reported that Neiman Marcus, Belk, HSN and ShopStyle have dropped Ivanka Trump merchandise. Meanwhile, Wal-Mart (WMT)-owned Jet.com also appears to have pulled Trump-branded goods, Mic reported, though Wal-Mart itself still offers Trump merchandise.T.J. Maxx and Marshalls, both owned by off-priced retail specialist TJX Cos. (TJX), also seem to be pulling back on Ivanka clothing.

[..] In other news, Under Armour (UAA) CEO Kevin Plank is under fire from his own brand's endorsers after calling Trump „a real asset to the country“ in a recent CNBC interview.

Trump has been sued more than 60 times since becoming president: A partial survey

Donald Trump is certainly no stranger to the legal system. He’s been sued thousands of times during his career as a real-estate developer, and that trend appears to be continuing now that he’s president — a job that already draws its fair share of litigation.

More than 60 lawsuits have been filed against Trump in federal court in the three weeks since he became president on Jan. 20. [..] Most of the federal lawsuits challenge Trump’s temporary ban on travel from seven predominantly Muslim countries. On Thursday an appeals court declined to lift a hold a federal judge placed on the ban.

A Utah Congressman Faces the 'Resistance' in His Home State

The backlash against Utah Representative Jason Chaffetz in his district has a distinctly Mormon flavor to it

Despite Utah’s status as one of the most conservative states in the country, Trump has never been very popular there. He carried the state’s electoral votes last year with just 45 percent of the vote. Up to now, Republican officeholders in the state have been largely insulated from their constituents’ opposition to the president—but some progressives in the state are hoping that will change.

“My read of the situation is that people here would have left Chaffetz largely alone if he hadn’t been so transparently bowing to Trump,” said Steve Evans, a Salt Lake City attorney and editor of By Common Consent, a popular liberal Mormon blog. “Before the election, Chaffetz had been vociferous about the morality of pursuing Clinton, so it’s viewed as hypocrisy that he now will do nothing with respect to Trump.”
