Der kanadische Schauspieler Leslie Nielsen ist im Alter von 84 Jahren in einem kalifornischen Krankenhaus an den Folgen einer Lungenentzündung gestorben. Zu weltweitem Ruhm und großer Beliebtheit gelangte Nielsen mit seiner Rolle als Frank Drebin in der ZAZ-Kultkomödie “Die nackte Kanone” und ihren beiden Fortsetzungen, sowie unzähligen ähnlich gelagerten Parodierollen, in denen er die Figur über die gesamten 90er hinweg bis zum Ende seiner Karriere immer wieder variierte. In “Airplane!” und der Fernsehserie “Die nackte Pistole” feierte er zuvor bereits Erfolge, während Nielsen außerdem in so unterschiedlichen Filmen wie “Forbidden Planet”, “Creepshow”, “Prom Night” oder “Nuts” auch weniger komödiantische Rollen spielte.

Ursprünglich war er als Messala in William Wylers “Ben Hur” vorgesehen, wurde jedoch durch Stephen Boyd ersetzt – denkbar, dass seine Karriere einen völlig anderen Verlauf genommen hätte, wäre er doch besetzt worden. Der Fluch des Type-Castings bewahrte den Schauspieler nach seinem Durchbruch zwar nicht vor dem mitunter würdelosen Slapstick-Ausverkauf, allein jedoch als liebenswürdig trotteliger Polizist Frank Drebin, einer der originärsten und populärsten Figuren der US-Komödie, wird er für alle Zeit in Erinnerung bleiben.
